GIRLS ONLY: MUSIC EQUIPMENT WORKSHOP

It is common knowledge that record collecting has traditionally been a male-dominated sport.  While this is still true in a broad sense, we are now witnessing a balancing of the guard as more and more ladies are getting into collecting vinyl.  To further that notion it has also been proclaimed that making music is primarily a male-dominated sport.  This landscape has been also changing with more and more ladies writing, performing and recording music these days.

So what about the geekery of gear-heads and their beloved sub-genre of sound we call “noise”?  While this may be the most “sausage” of all the tangents of music craft, we bring you: FIN, a.k.a. Rebecca Fin.

FIN will be hosting a series of girls only workshops to even the odds for those ladies motivated to join the DIY culture of sound clash, beauty and chaos.  For her first instalment she will be introducing some fundamental aspects of craft and exemplify possibilities. Sorry guys, as hot as it may be for you to see ladies playing with tapes, mixers, samplers and building contact mics, this event is strictly for the females.

This workshop will be hosted in The Darkroom behind June Records.

STAFF PICK OF THE WEEK

The Love Sculpture: Forms and Feelings (Vintage - Parrot Records - USA, 1970)
The Love Sculpture sadly split up after Forms and Feelings, leaving us with only two records. Fortunately, this album is densely packed with enough huge riffs to make up for their brief existence. Though Forms and Feelings is commonly referred to as a psychedelic record, it’s not just a wash of fuzz guitar. Instead, the Love Sculpture’s guitars both brood and wail in bluesy overdrive, exploring enough dynamic range to keep things interesting. Combined with soaring vocals and sludgy drums, the Love Sculpture explore enough sonic space to prevent the record from descending into the realm of total guitar-wankery. For those of us who still love guitar solos but need a little more, this record totally hits the spot.

Dig it,
Dennis

Independent music, art, limited merch, screenings and more!

Dear independent music store supporters,

We’re entering our 4th week of soft-operation and there’s community things in the works. We want to highlight some future plans:

1) Independent Music

June is dedicated to providing access to local and independent music.

We only carry vinyl and cassettes.  If you don’t have music available in either of these formats we can still contribute with access to great resources such as: innovative recording studios and places to get music duplicated and pressed.  If you already have an LP, 7” or a demo tape, we will be happy to consign them at the shop for you and tell people about your music.

2) June Gallery: Art & Limited Merchandise

June is planning to launch a quarterly art series of original art, photography, etc. on our rear east and west walls. Each quarter we will set a theme of concise parameters and create a sense of unique context.  We will consider all submissions and then select 3-6 pieces to hang on our East Wall for three months. The first series and opening date has not been set yet, we’re currently assembling a committee for the purpose of: curation, promotion, partnerships and development of this ongoing project.

On the opposite wall, there will be original artist created merchandise (such as printed tee shirts) that will all have a limited run (each item numbered).  These limited items will fit the theme of each series and will also be available quarterly.

3) The Dark Room

At the back room of June Records is our work area that becomes The Dark Room after hours.  The Dark Room will host multiple after hour events such as: screenings, presentations, workshops and live avant garde/experimental/noise performances.

The screenings will consist of both social (music and art related) films and screenings of independent shorts, films and documentaries.

4) More…

We will also be hosting live in-store performances and will encourage artists and musicians to avoid playing regular sets they would normally perform in a more traditional venue. The goal is to create an alternative performance space in which artists need not feel confined to any creative expectations. We want all musicians who perform at June to feel comfortable exploring the parameters of live performance and challenging the expectations of audiences within the shop.

We will try to document these performances to the best of our ability. Some of the recordings may be considered for a future series of 7” releases.  This is yet to be determined.

A note to the community

If you wish to use June Records to facilitate an opening or launch for music/art/literary community and DIY related events let us know what you have in mind.

If you are interested in contributing, submitting, organizing or participating in any capacity please feel free to contact Ian or just come by the shop (we have an espresso machine) and hang out.

Be seeing you,

June Records

Week 3: Shout outs, thanks & things brewing.

Entering our 3rd week, we’ve been super busy building the shop and our community to bring an exciting addition to the Toronto vinyl and music culture scene.  There’s now some due thanks and shout outs that must be handed out.

Firstly, thanks to all Toronto vinyl and music lovers for the overwhelming support and love over the past couple weeks of our soft launch.  We’ve re-connected and met so many amazing people in the community and appreciate all the business, feedback and collaboration possibilities.  June Records is building up to be a special place.

Regarding collaboration and support, here’s our shout out list after 3 weeks of operation (in no particular order):

  • Tad Michalak of Burn Down The City for live music event collaboration.  Tad’s a show and tour music promoter in Toronto and has worked with some super sweet bands and artists.  If you’re looking for some underground, experimental, and bleeding edge stuff, Tad’s a guy to connect with!
  • Joseph Fuda of Fudagraphy and OZ Studios for taking photos of our shop and joining our team of photographers for future documentation of events and openings happening at the shop.  Joseph is a professional photographer and runs OZ Studios, a gallery on Ossington in Toronto that hosts both art openings and musical performances.
  • Emily Keeler of Little Brother Magazine for working with us on hosting our first Magazine Launch!  Emily is starting a new magazine in TO about arts and culture that’s slated to launch in August.  She’s also on the look out for submissions so if you’re looking for more opportunities in the literary or photography realm, check her out!
  • Sarah-Jane Wofman Ford, stand up comedian, zen-quiz-master and manager of Queen Video (College St.), for being around.  Sarah is working with us to help organize our film screening and quarterly art series ambitions.  She’s probably one of the coolest people I know.
  • Vjosana Shkurti, independent video/photographer for helping with some of June’s future video promotional material, and with organize our film screening and quarterly art series ambitions.  Vjosana has great aesthetic taste and some of her work can be seen here.
  • Chris Iler, an institution in the Canadian punk scene, dropped of some Fans Of Bad Productions Records wax for us with some of the best DIY Canadian hardcore/punk recordings I’ve feasted ears on.  I was floored by the double LP 50 Canadian Punk Bands comp (both in sound and line up).  We want to work with more passionate people like Chris that know “the good stuff” in all genres of DIY music.  Thank Chris!
  • Nyles Miszczyk, producer, musician, and sound engineer (also works at Moog Audio) for being our official in-house recording engineer and sound specialist for our future live performances.  Nyles’ ear, taste and reputation is regarded highly in the Toronto independent music community for both his knowledge of musical equipment and as a producer.  We’re lucky to have Nyles in our group.
  • Melody Lau of BlogTO for visiting and the great write up!  One of BlogTO’s newest staff, Melody is a great “go to” if you have music news and happenings in Toronto.
  • Ian Worang of TheGridTO for visiting and writing the great story on our shop! Ian’s an awesome guy that’s also into music and vinyl. We had fun interviewing with him.
  • Doug Brown of IDIGS blog, documentary film maker, school teacher and a well known and respected all around vinyl “head”. Doug also organizes the annual Mid Town Record Show (FB Page) in Toronto.  Doug was nice enough to do a story on us on his blog and will also be screening his feature length documentary at June Records, stay posted on that one!

There’s also a lot of people that have helped who are not on this list.  For all those collaborators, family and friends: “THANK YOU” for all you’ve helped us with, we wouldn’t be here without your continuing support.

Love and appreciation,

June Records
