STAFF PICKS OF THE WEEK: NEW RELEASES

Artist: Pyramids with Wraiths | Release: Magpie & Raven (12”, one track, one sided) | Style: Improvised/Noise/Drone/Doom/Post-Rock | Web preview: here.
Pyramids is one of those enigmatic mystery bands out of California on the Aurora Borealis label (one of my favorites). This release is a track that’s about 25 minutes long and for drone, post-rock, doom, noise lovers it doesn’t fail to deliver. The packaging for this 12” is also beautiful and it comes with a download code. The pressing sounds great, as I cranked it quite loud during my first play.
If you like this band, we don’t have many copies of this limited press (all their pressings actually quite limited) and I’m sure it’ll sell out quickly. Just sayin’…
Godspeed and good hunting,
Ian
Artist: Laetitia Sadier | Release: Silencio | Label: Drag City
Style: Post-rock/singer-songwriter | Web preview: here
Full disclosure: I would probably pay to listen to Laetitia Sadier recite the phone book. While not making solo records, Sadier is the principal vocalist for drone-rock band Stereolab. What makes Silencio such an intriguing release is Sadier’s departure from her main band’s sound, instead opting for a more lounge and bossanova feel. Sadier’s voice still floats above each of Silencio’s tracks in her signature angelic style, furthering her unique brand of versatility. Silencio also features guest spots from fellow post-rock stalwarts Tim Gane (Stereolab), John McEntire (Tortoise) and Sam Prekop (The Sea and Cake).
Dig it,
Dennis

FEATURED NEW RELEASES
Death: …For the Whole World to See (Drag City)
Their time in the studio was overseen by engineer Jim Vitti, whose work with Parliament/ Funkadelic seems to have informed his decision to record Death in raw fashion with little polish, showcasing the organic power relationships within the trio. The songs recorded here make up …For the Whole World to See, which today blasts from the speakers as a fresh and inspired early entry in the category of punk rock. Death had a single pressed, Politicians In My Eyes b/w Keep On Knocking, selling them at their shows and on the street. Things weren’t really going anywhere when they heard from Columbia Records’ president Clive Davis. He was interested, but he had one demand — they’d have to change their name. David, acting as the band’s leader, would have no part of it, a decision that ultimately brought an end to Death. Moving to New England, David, Bobby and Dannis reconnected with their faith, forming the Christian rock-n-roll band The 4th Movement, whose self-released early-80s album joined Death’s 45 as a sought-after obscurity for the next generation. 2009 is the time that Death is finally here …For The Whole World to See. …For The Whole World to See is the first full-length release EVER for the band called Death — with only one 7” single to their name, and that usually goes for about a grand per. That’s $1000! For those who do have the single, the remastered sound here will break you up.
Els Masturbadors Mongòlics: Els Masturbadors Mongòlics (Munster Records - Spain)
Els Masturbadors Mongòlics were one of the first punk bands from Barcelona, formed in 1977 by Lluis Miracle with an ever-changing line-up which had guitarist Paco Martínez as its other constant member. Among the people involved was Manel, later guitarist of Decibelios. In the same way as legendary bands like La Banda Trapera Del Río, the usual lack of resources and general incomprehension towards Els Masturbadors brought them all kinds of problems, only made worse by their completely irreverent attitude, which caused chaos almost everywhere they played, including their participation in the festival Canet Rock in 1978 — all of which led to the break up of the band at the end of that year, just over a year after they first got together. Before that, they managed to record a number of tracks for EMI, which never saw official release and are now made available for the first time. It’s the evidence of a crucial period for the later changes in Spanish music, which were only possible thanks to the transgressive and no-holds-barred behavior of bands such as Els Masturbadors Mongòlics.
The Semi-Colon: Ndia Egbuo Ndia (Afro Jigida) (Comb & Razor)
Ndia Egbuo Ndia (Afro-Jigida), an LP recorded by the Nigerian rock group Semi-Colon in 1976, was an experimental response to Fela Kuti’s then-dominant afro-beat sound, substituting Fela’s sophisticated horn charts and jazz leanings with wiry electric guitar work and a passion for vintage rock ‘n’ roll. Long fabled and coveted amongst collectors and DJs alike, the album has remained one of the rarest of the Nigerian 1970s ‘afro’ cycle. Comb & Razor Sound is proud to be reissuing this lost gem of afro-rock for a new audience. This reissue marks the second release from Comb & Razor Sound, following up the success of its inaugural offering, 2011’s Nigerian disco and boogie compilation Brand New Wayo, which was spotlighted on NPR’s All Things Considered and received favorable mention on its Song of the Day. The new edition of Afro-Jigida continues Comb & Razor’s exploration of rare, cutting-edge popular music produced in Nigeria in the 1970s and 80s.
Lee Hazlewood: The LHI Years: Singles, Nudes & Backsides (1968-1971)
Though he’s perhaps best known for his work with Nancy Sinatra (including writing mega-hit ‘These Boots Are Made For Walking’), Hazlewood did stunning work away from that particular glamour queen and found latter day champions in Beck, Sonic Youth, and Jarvis Cocker. As a true legend of the great American songbook and a rebellious pioneer who left behind a lengthy trail of echo laden pop masterpieces, Lee’s influence continues to reverberate today. Between 1968-71, Hazlewood not only released his finest solo work, but produced numerous artists on LHI. From acid-folk and country-rock to pop-psych and soul, Hazlewood issued dozens of long forgotten 45s and LPs.
